Surviving the Tsunami in South India

For tsunami survivors in South India enduring the first month of life since the disaster, these are tough days indeed. They mourn the loss of loved ones. They possess nothing. They form lines for everything - rice, toiletries, bedding, and biscuits. They go through the motions of living. Past, present and future are all unpleasant topics fraught with grief, despair and uncertainty. There is nowhere for their mind to wander. In a culture where fate looms large, who could possibly be their defender? God? He allowed this. Mother Nature? She betrayed them. Yet for every dark sign of hopelessness, an equally bright reminder of the power of the human spirit shines through. Faith still buoys the soul. Relief workers nourish the body. And human solidarity comforts the lonely. _ Reporting from Tamil Nadu (India)
